December Journal

A reminder that the deadline for contributions for the December Journal is Thursday 30th November 2017.

We encourage all members to submit articles to be included in this and future copies of the journal by emailing them to our Editor. You can also mail copy to - Editor APWA, P.O.Box 3167, Victoria Point   Q  416

APWA Australian Plaiting Championships - Glen Innes NSW 2017

To be held at Glen Innes Showgrounds, Glen Innes NSW on Saturday 4th November 2017.

Campsites with and without power available. BBQ and drinks on Friday 3rd November 2017.

On both Saturday and Sunday we hope members bring along some work so that new members can get help and advice and also visitors can see what we do as a craft.From their interest we could attract new members to our group.

The Tourist Information Centre and the local press will be given information on the weekend gathering.

We will be arranging lunch on the Saturday - please advise and pay Peter Johnston by 10.00 am to assist in catering numbers.

Start making plans to be there for a great weekend!

Learning to Plait Courses

If you are a visitor to our website and you are wanting to learn to plait there are a number of places that conduct courses in plaiting and whipmaking.

Taubman & Webb Whip & Belt Plaiting Schools

Richard Taubman (Taubman & Webb) will again be conducting whip and belt plaiting schools in early 2018 (dates tba). There will be redhide whip school(s), which will include a redhide whip with half plait 8 strand roo handle, a 9 strand plaited belt and key rings. There will also be an 8 plait kangaroo hide whip school which will include an 8 plait whip with an 8 strand fully plaited steel lined handle.

These various schools will  take 2 days to complete. If you choose to do both you will need to book and attend on separate weekends.

All equipment and materials will be provided along with meals and a BBQ on the Sundays after the schools. Some accommodation can be provided along with room for vans and camper trailers on the station "Spring Valley". There is also motels and pub accommodation (not included in the price) in the local towns of Boorowa and Young both about 30 kms away.

Both types of schools are limited to 10 people and the total cost is $375.00 per person. (subject to change)

In the meantime, if you are interested and together with others there are sufficient numbers a course could be organised.

Community College Northern Inland Inc. Gunnedah & Warialda NSW

At  Warialda on Saturday & Sunday 18th & 19th November 2017 there will be an "8 Plait Roo Hide Whipmaking Course" from 8.30am to 4.30pm each day conducted by John McMaster.

Cost for course is $170.00 plus cost of materials. Please bring a small, very sharp knife.

  • Kinnear Bulldog Poley stock saddle (Melbourne) -  excellent to pristine condition
  • Cox Poley by Bertie Cox (Miriam Vale)  -  in good condition onwards
  • J R Humphreys (Barcaldine/ Rockhampton)  -  any condition as long as it shows a maker's mark
  • Or any significant stock saddle (hair lined)

Subscription / Membership Fees - REMINDER

Fees are due on the 1st January and need to be paid by 28th February of each year in order to receive your March, June, September and December journals.

If you join or renew mid-year you will receive copies of the journals you have missed for that year.

Renewal reminders appear in each December journal.

We will only accept payment for one year's subscription at a time.
